US Steel Announced Start-Up of New EAF Steelmaking Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based integrated steelmaker, United States Steel Corporation (US Steel) announced successful start-up of its new electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking facility at its Fairfield, Alabama plant. The EAF tapped its first heat of liquid steel on October 20th.

The start-up of the technologically advanced furnace facility is considered as the latest milestone in the company’s earlier announced “Best of Both” strategy, aimed at providing maximum value to its customers. The EAF will have a steelmaking capacity of 1.6 million tons per annum.

Commenting on the development, David B. Burritt, President and Chief Executive Officer, U.S. Steel said that the EAF will help the company to significantly enhance its ability to deliver customer-centric solutions and results. He commended the team for safely accomplishing the milestone, while navigating the disruptive influences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project will add significantly more sustainable steelmaking technology to its portfolio, he added.

The company is excited to provide its customers with more sustainable tubular solutions, said Douglas R. Matthews, U. S. Steel Senior Vice President – Tubular Products.
