U.S. Steel Mills Boost Output and Utilization in Latest Week

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. raw steel production edged higher during the week ended September 26, 2026, reported the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). As per the latest weekly production figures, U.S. domestic mills recorded stronger output both year over year and from the previous week.
The U.S. steelmakers produced 1.845 million net tons during the latest week. This was 3.9% higher than the 1.775 million net tons produced during the comparable week in 2025. Mill capability utilization also improved to 80.5%, compared with 78.4% a year earlier.
The latest figures represent a 3.4% jump over the previous week’s production. Output had totaled 1.785 million net tons during the week ended September 19, when utilization stood at 77.9%.
Cumulative U.S. raw steel production continued to report strong momentum in 2026. Adjusted output through September 26 reached 70.166 million net tons, up 5.3% from 66.644 million net tons recorded during the corresponding period last year. Year-to-date capability utilization stood higher at 79.1%, compared with 77.2% in 2025.
The Southern district remained the largest producer, accounting for 840,000 net tons during the latest week. The Great Lakes followed with 537,000 tons, while the Midwest produced 276,000 tons. The Northeast and Western districts contributed 130,000 tons and 62,000 tons, respectively.
