China produced 83.6 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel in April 2026, down 2.8% compared with the same month a year before.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global crude steel production data for April 2026 indicates mixed performances among the world’s top steel-producing nations, said the World Steel Association (worldsteel). China remained the largest producer despite a year-on-year decline, while India, the United States, and several other major producers posted notable output gains.
China produced 83.6 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel in April 2026, down 2.8% compared with the same month a year before. For the January-April period, Chinese output totaled 331.1 Mt, registering a 4.1% decline year-on-year.
India retained its position as the second-largest producer, generating 13.8 Mt in April, up 3.9%, while cumulative output for the first four months of the year rose sharply by 9.4% to 58.7 Mt.
The United States recorded one of the strongest monthly gains among the top producers, with output surging higher by 9.4% to 7.2 Mt. The January-April production by the country totalled 28.1 Mt, up 6.6% year-on-year.
Japan produced 6.6 Mt, up marginally by 0.3%, while South Korea increased production by 4.8% to 5.2 Mt. On the contrary, the estimated steel output from Russia fell sharply by 12.4% to 5.0 Mt.
Meanwhile, Türkiye, Germany, Brazil, and Vietnam all posted production gains during the previous month.
