SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nucor Corporation plans to invest $59 million in its Vulcraft Indiana facility in St. Joe. The proposed investment will expand the plant’s manufacturing capabilities to include steel grating products. The project is expected to add 20 full-time positions to the facility’s workforce, which currently exceeds 300 employees.
The investment is part of Nucor’s broader strategy to strengthen its downstream steel operations and expand its product range. The additional capacity will help Vulcraft meet customer demand while supporting the company’s long-term growth plans, said company executives.

This is Nucor’s fourth significant investment in Indiana in recent years. Previous projects included a $290 million modernization of sheet mill operations in Crawfordsville, a $115 million utility infrastructure facility, and a $28.5 million insulated metal panel plant in Waterloo. Collectively, these projects have added about 300 jobs across the state.
Vulcraft has been part of Nucor since 1962, when its acquisition marked the company’s entry into the steel business. The Indiana operation opened in 1972 and is now one of nine Vulcraft plants in North America. Vulcraft manufactures structural steel products widely used in warehouses, data centers, schools, hospitals, retail buildings and other construction projects.
