Global Crude Steel Production Falls 1.9% in April 2026: Worldsteel

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global crude steel production recorded decline during the month of April this year, with output from the 69 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totaling 153.4 million tonnes (Mt). This is modestly down by 1.9% compared with April 2025, according to the latest industry data.

Among regions, Africa posted the strongest annual growth, producing 2.1 Mt, up 11.5% year-on-year, while North America recorded a 6.9% rise to 9.4 Mt. South American output also was up by 3.1% to 3.4 Mt, and Europe outside the EU grew 4.2% to 3.6 Mt.

However, Asia and Oceania, the world’s largest steel-producing region, saw output decline 1.3% to 114.2 Mt. The EU produced 11.0 Mt, down 1.8%, while the sharpest regional dip was seen in Middle East, whose output plunged nearly 27.6% to 3.7 Mt. Russia and other CIS nations, including Ukraine, reported a 13.4% fall in output to 6.0 Mt.

China retained its position as the world’s leading steel producer with an output of 83.6 Mt, despite recording 2.8% decline in output. India expanded production by 3.9% to 13.8 Mt, while the United States rose 9.4% to 7.2 Mt. Germany and Türkiye posted strong gains of 9.5% and 9.4%, respectively.

The cumulative crude steel production during the initial four-month period of the year across reporting nations reached 613.3 Mt, down 2.0% year-on-year.

These 69 countries included in the list accounted for approximately 98% of global steel production in 2025.
