Alabama’s largest steel subcontractor completes work on mammoth $425 million Texas project

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Alabama’s largest steel subcontractor has recently supplied several thousand tons of structural steel for one of the nation’s largest solar cell manufacturing projects.

FabArc Steel Supply has completed about 3,374 tons of structural steel for G2_Austin Solar Cell Fab, a solar cell manufacturing facility in Rockdale, Texas.

In all, the company has made 749 columns, 4,459 beams, 222 roof trusses and about 6,800 square feet of steel grating.

Fabrication of the steel began early this year.

The project is owned by T1 Energy, Inc. and the contractor is W. G. Yates & Sons Construction Co.

Once operational, the first phase is expected to produce up to 2.1 gigawatts of high-efficiency TOPCon solar cells annually, increasing the United States’ capacity to manufacture silicon-based solar cells.

The first phase of the project represents a $400 million to $425 million investment and is expected to create up to 1,800 advanced manufacturing jobs in Texas.

Donnie Bragg, senior project manager for FabArc Steel Supply, said the project “showcases the scale and complexity of work our team is equipped to deliver, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to work with T1 Energy, Yates Construction, and the entire project team to help bring this fab to life.”
