Steelworkers and Cleveland-Cliffs and U.S. Steel agree on contract extension

The U.S. Steel union update said it’s a 30 day extension. The Cliffs union update said the extension is until October 1st. This is for the steel group, which includes Minorca Mine.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): One day before the labor contract expires for the six mines on the Range, word has come from the unions that there is an agreement to work under a contract extension.

The USW sent out updates via text on Monday that both Cleveland-Cliffs and U.S. Steel have agreed to this. The steelworkers maintain they should not be rushed into a bad deal.

The U.S. Steel union update said it’s a 30 day extension. The Cliffs union update said the extension is until October 1st. This is for the steel group, which includes Minorca Mine.

Then, later on Monday afternoon, the notice that the Cliffs mines will also be under an extension through October 1st. Their bargaining committee will remain in Pittsburgh.

Economic improvements will be retroactive to September 1st, which is when the contracts expire.

On Monday morning, some steelworkers rallied outside of Minntac in Mt. Iron, calling for a fair contract now.
