A breakdown of product categories shows mixed performance compared with the same month last year.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute reported that steel shipments from U.S. mills totalled 7,583,826 net tons in January 2026, reflecting steady growth in the domestic steel sector.
According to the industry body, January shipments increased 1.7% compared with 7,454,338 net tons shipped in December 2025. On a year-over-year basis, shipments rose 2.0% from the 7,435,458 net tons recorded in January 2025.
The data indicates modest but consistent demand for steel products across several key market segments in the United States. Industry analysts note that infrastructure activity, manufacturing output, and energy sector demand continue to support shipment levels despite ongoing volatility in global steel markets.
A breakdown of product categories shows mixed performance compared with the same month last year. Shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip posted the strongest growth, rising 11% year over year. Hot-rolled sheet and strip shipments also recorded a slight increase of 1%.
However, cold-rolled sheet shipments declined significantly, dropping 13% compared with January 2025 levels.
Overall, the latest figures suggest that while certain steel product categories are experiencing stronger demand, others remain under pressure due to shifting market conditions and evolving end-user demand patterns.
