SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has appointed Tom Cox, president of SSAB Americas, to its Board of Directors, strengthening the organisation’s leadership with extensive steel industry expertise.
AISI Chairman Lourenco Goncalves, who also serves as chairman, president and chief executive officer of Cleveland-Cliffs, stated that Cox’s long-standing background in metallurgy, plant operations, and strategic management will enhance the institute’s ability to address industry challenges. He noted that Cox’s technical understanding and leadership experience would support AISI’s mission of advancing the U.S. steel sector.

AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey highlighted Cox’s deep familiarity with manufacturing efficiency, adding that his insights will help guide discussions on policy development, market competitiveness, and steel innovation affecting domestic steel producers.
Cox joined SSAB Americas in 2001 and has progressed through several key roles covering engineering services, process optimisation, and rolling mill operations. In 2020, he was appointed general manager of the company’s Montpelier, Iowa steel facility, where he oversaw production performance and operational improvements.
Prior to SSAB, Cox gained industry experience with LTV Steel. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA degree.
Tom Cox, president of SSAB Americas, has been appointed to the AISI Board.
He brings extensive experience in metallurgy, steel plant operations, manufacturing efficiency, and strategic leadership.
He is expected to support industry policy development, enhance market competitiveness, and promote innovation in the U.S. steel sector.
