Steel Industry To Recognize Companies with Least Carbon Footprint

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has urged steel companies to participate in the carbon emissions data collection programme, which allows companies to compare their CO2 emission levels with peers and take necessary action for further improvement. The worldsteel Climate Action Recognition Programme is open to all steel companies and steel-producing sites. The primary aim of the initiative is to obtain a base level of emissions for the industry.

worldsteel has devised a uniform, well-defined data collection methodology to ensure that all sites that report emission data do so within same boundaries and parameters. The data submitted by individual entities will be kept secure and confidential. The data will be known only to the reporting companies and the worldsteel staff administering the project and will be used only towards calculation of global emission information.

According to the Association, companies must use an online tool to submit emission data, which will be hosted on ISO accredited dedicated servers, so as to ensure total security and protection. The data submitted must be verifiable, complete and be relevant for more than 90% of total crude steel production by the entity. The entire collection process will be overseen by worldsteel staff and verified by an eminent panel of experts.

The methodology designed to calculate carbon dioxide emission intensity from iron and steel production is separated into two categories. The first category covers steel plants with blast furnace, whereas the second category pertains to steel plants with electric arc furnace (EAF). It allows for comparison of emission standards between sites. Further, the feedback from worldsteel will allow companies and sites to develop their own plans to reduce emissions to equal or come closer to the best in the industry.

The companies or sites that take part in the data collection programme are eligible to apply for a certificate of recognition from worldsteel. The certificate will be issued following the approval of submitted data. The certificate allows the site or company to use the special ‘Climate Action Member’ logo on any of their materials. The certificate of recognition will be valid for two years (2017-2018).
