SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Firefighters knocked down a large scrap metal fire in South Windsor on Wednesday afternoon, according to the fire department.
The South Windsor Fire Department was called to G&S Scrap Metal on Nutmeg Road at around 1:30 p.m. for a report of a scrap metal pile ablaze. Fire Chief Kevin Cooney and police arrived at the scene within minutes and found a large pile — measuring about 200 feet by 50 feet — engulfed in flames, the fire department said in a Facebook post.
Crews established streams and knocked down most of the blaze within half an hour, according to the fire department.
The business reported that there were no hazards in the pile, which the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection also confirmed, the fire department said.
At around 3 p.m., the fire department said it would be at the scene for a while using excavators to search for and extinguish any remaining pockets of fire.
