Sonoco Declared Permanent Closure of Hutchinson Paper Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Sonoco Hutchinson Paper Mill has filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice with the State of Kansas on 6th March, 2023, stating that the facility will be soon closing permanently. The decision is likely to impact nearly 116 employees.

Tucker Allen, the business services director of Kansas WorkforceOne said that it will everything possible to work with the dislocated employees to help them secure their next job, including providing assistance to create resumes and offering them a few opportunities, Tucker said.

The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce will help in connecting affected employees with community resources and community employers who are hiring currently. It is very sad and unfortunate to learn that a company that has been operating in the community for several decades has decided to close its doors, Teufel added.

In addition, the Kansas Department of Commerce plans to initiate Rapid Response services to impacted employees.

Sonoco had purchased the 90,000 ton paper mill located at 100 N. Halstead St. in late-October 2001.
