Smurfit Kappa's New Compact Film Leads to Significant Reduction in Plastic Use

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced introduction of a new compact film, which in turn is expected to reduce the amount of plastic used to manufacture bags. The introduction of E Compact 60- the new light 60-micron EVOH film is considered as the company’s next major step towards a circular economy.

The company press release said that it took more than a year for the company to develop the film. Smurfit Kappa had applied its strict qualification criteria to ensure the film’s mechanical and barrier properties, before granting final approval for use. The new film is based on new and more resistant PE resin technologies. The sustainable film has helped the company in reducing bag weight by 16% and carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 12%.

The company has been working on technologies to make its packaging most sustainable. It has successfully reduced film thickness by nearly 15% over the past 15 years, he added.

Smurfit Kappa’s recently launched Vitop Compact tap has resulted in savings of 2.7 tons of plastic per 1 million bags.
