SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Packaging major Smurfit Kappa conducted a survey, which reveals that Conscious Consumerism continues to keep sustainability as a top priority for businesses. The ‘Balancing Sustainability and Profitability Survey’ was conducted among a total of 200 senior industry executives and 1,500 consumers in the UK.
The survey revealed that nearly 61% of the consumers expect that the brands they buy from should have clear sustainable practices. Although price continues to influence the purchasing decision of almost 65% of consumers, majority of them tend to have purchased products in the past six months, specifically because it had reusable or biodegradable packaging. In fact 56% purchased highly priced products or services only because they were sustainably sourced.

Meantime, 63% of businesses noted that their attitude towards sustainability is mainly customer-driven. However, 50% of the businesses said that greater awareness of company’s sustainability practices among consumers will be beneficial for them in the long run. Incidentally, the survey found that approximately 69% of consumers have troubles in identifying sustainability practices by brands.
