SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced starting up of new recovery boiler at its Nettingsdorf kraftliner mill in Austria. The industry-leading recovery boiler marks an important milestone in the company’s previously announced ‘Future Energy Plant’ project, aimed at boosting the sustainability and efficiency of the mill.
The plant is expected to further boost the energy optimization efforts at the mill facility. It is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 40,000 tonnes. In other words, it will cut two-thirds of the current emissions at the mill.
The ‘Future Energy Plant’ project also comprises of development of an advanced new steam turbine, upgrading of the existing water treatment plant and installation of additional drying cylinders.

Commenting on the achievement, Günter Hochrathner, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf said that it is a great moment for all the employees, By starting to operate the new recovery boiler, the company has taken an important step forward in sustainability. Meantime, Laurent Sellier, COO Smurfit Kappa Paper & Board, Europe added that the investment in Nettingsdorf will help the company to ensure long-term supply of high-quality and sustainable containerboard.
