Smurfit Kappa Completed Key Investment Project at Zulpich Paper Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced completion of large-scale sustainability project at its Zulpich paper mill in Germany. The €11.5 million investment will help the company to significantly reduce the plant’s carbon dioxide emissions. The execution of the project delivered major redesign of the plant’s multi-fuel boiler so as to provide a more sustainable fuel source.

According to the company, the mill is now powered by a combination of its biogas produced by its own circular water treatment plant, natural gas and residual materials produced as a result of paper recycling process. The project reduces carbon emissions at the mill by more than 25%, resulting in annual savings of more than 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide. It represents 2% reduction in the company’s global carbon emissions.

The circular approach implemented at the mill extends beyond its own operations to create loops with the company’s Parenco and Roermond paper mills in the Netherlands. The residual materials from these mills serve as a valuable source of fuel for Zulpich paper mill’s boiler.

The investment in the high-performing boiler has further reinforced its commitment to a circular business model, said Andreas Zeitlinger, Managing Director of the Zülpich paper mill.
