Sims Metal Ordered To Take Corrective Action Following Fire Incident

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has ordered Sims Metal Redwood City, California facility to initiate an investigation in order to determine the extent of toxic pollution following the fire incident at the yard facility on March 9th, 2022. The state agency has also ordered the scrap metal recycler to clean up the pollution, if any.

The DTSC noted that it is concerned about the potential health impacts of the pollution, as the plant happens to be within two miles of several day care centers, parks, hospitals, schools and homes. Also, the recycling operation is adjacent to Redwood Creek, a public trail and two islands that are part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, it noted.

The evaluation of the investigation and cleanup operation will cover recent and historical release at the facility, including any impacts from the recent fire. Sims will have to meet deadlines prescribed by the DTSC and submit required investigation report to it, including a detailed plan for cleaning up contamination.

Dr. Meredith Williams, Director, DTSC noted that the agency has the responsibility to protect communities and environment from companies and industries that pollute. The action is the latest in the string of similar actions against metal recyclers and shredders across California, he added.
