Sims Metal Gets Permit for New Scrap Metal Recycling Facility in Nevada

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Fernley City Council has approved a special use permit for Sims Metal Management (SMM) to open a new scrap metal recycling facility. The new facility will operate on 10 acres at 175 Lyon Drive in the western central part of Nevada off Industrial Drive.

This will be SMM’s second facility in northern Nevada region. The company already operates a facility in Sparks, which processes nearly 1,200 tons of aluminum cans and around 9,000 tons of household appliances every year. . In addition to the above facilities, it also operates five more locations in the Las Vegas region in southern Nevada.

The new SMM location in Fernley will accept a wide range of scrap materials including aluminum used beverage cans (UBCs), appliances, aluminum siding and gutters, metal fencing and water heaters. Councilman Ray Lacy noted that the new facility offers Fernley residents to recycle aluminum cans for money. The facility will offer employment to nearly 30 people, with average pay at around $20 per hour. The company also assured that there won’t be a massive traffic impact due to opening of the new facility.

Sims Metal Management is the world’s leading publicly listed metal recycler, with operations encompassing the buying, processing and selling of ferrous and non-ferrous recycled metals. The company’s metals recycling operations are spread across five continents including the United States, Australasia and the United Kingdom.
