SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Eren Holdings announced progress in redevelopment of the Shotton Paper Mill site in North Wales. The efforts, as part of the previously announced £600m investment, are being led by consulting engineer Arup in collaboration with architects AHR.
UPM had ended paper production at the Deeside mill site in September last year and sold the site to Eren Paper. The mill had the capacity to produce around 260,000 tonnes of newsprint paper per annum. As per the transformation plan, the production will be boosted to around 750,000 tonnes of cardboard per annum. The facility will also have the capability to recycle all the wastepaper generated across Wales.

The initial phase of the project comprises project management, design and engineering, which will be led by Arup. The plant is expected to become fully operational by 2024. As part of the expansion, a container board machine building, new warehouse and dispatch facilities, and a combined heat and power boiler building will be added. Also, the facility will add a corrugated packaging factory and tissue factory will be opened at the site in later phases of the project.
The development is expected to create one of the most technologically advanced paper mills in the world.
