UPM Stopped Shotton Paper Mill Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): UPM announced permanent closure of paper production at its Shotton newsprint mill site. The site, along with all related assets, will now be transferred to Turkish Eren Paper Ltd, a subsidiary of Eren Holding.

The mill, producing newsprint paper, has a production capacity of around 260,000 tonnes per annum. The mill offers direct employment to 183 people, in addition to 231 jobs in its Material Recovery and the Recycling Facility and other service operations. UPM announced that the Renewable Energy Generation plant, the Material Recovery and the Recycling Facility (MRRF) will continue to operate throughout the conversion process.

Despite the closure, UPM will continue supplying customers with the full portfolio of newsprint, magazine and fine paper grades. Also, it will continue to source recycled paper from the UK.

Winfried Schaur, Executive Vice President UPM Communication Papers stated that closing of the newsprint paper production at UPM Shotton marks the end of a very successful chapter of UPM Communication Papers’ history in the UK. He thanked the site employees for their committed and professional work over the past several decades. Furthermore, he acknowledged the strong support by the local authorities.

The upcoming transformation of the mill is expected to provide positive long-term perspective, not only for the people of Shotton, but also for the entire region as well.
