NEW YORK (Scrap Monster) : Months after submitting the proposal, Ben Weitsman and Son of Buffalo won the approval of the Planning Board to set up a new scrap metal recycling unit in the northwest region of New York city.
The company had submitted its proposal to the Common Council long back in July 2013. The Council passed the site plan to the Planning Board for its approval on December 18th.
Ben Weitsman in tie-up with Son of Buffalo intends to set up a $ 7 million metal scrap recycling unit. As per the project plan the unit will receive scrap metal at its yard and would then be loaded to trucks to shift it to other facilities of the company.
The site plan clearly states that no shredding activity will be carried out at the new facility.
The neighborhood of the proposed site had expressed concerns over the sound that may be produced while loading heavy metal scrap such as automobiles etc., are transferred on to trucks.
The Planning Board after almost two months of review and discussions has finally voted for the proposal on the condition that the unit should integrate proper noise mitigation mechanisms. Moreover the site should not undertake noise making activities up to 8 AM on Saturdays and up to 9 AM on Sundays. The Planning Board has also prohibited long-term storage of scrap metal items at the premises.
The proposal now awaits the final nod from the Common Council. The North Council member Joseph Golombek has stated that a final decision on the matter can be anticipated in two weeks time.
