The financial returns to collectors are not at all encouraging, as the prices offered to them are significantly low.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The scrap metal industry urged the government of Ghana to implement stricter regulations to curb rising criminal activities within the sector. The loopholes in the current regulations has allowed infiltration of criminals into scrap metal trade. This has badly impacted the functioning of genuine businesses as well.

They claim that the nation's scrap metal business has struggled to preserve credibility and order due to a lack of clear regulations and lax oversight. The Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) recently hosted a gathering of scrap metal merchants where the observations were made.

The nation's steelmakers are having trouble finding scrap metal for their operations, the forum said. Because the prices paid to collectors are so low, the financial returns to them are not at all promising.

According to GIISDEC Chief Executive Officer Williams Okofo-Dateh, the organization is working with the appropriate authorities to implement a regulatory framework for the scrap metal sector. The suggested action plan calls for granting permits to scrap metal merchants, putting in place oversight procedures, and putting a stop to unlawful activity. He noted that the rules are meant to safeguard the scrap metal sector by encouraging sustainable development methods, not to interfere with the activities of legal dealers.
