Scrap Metal Facility Fined by OSHA for Serious Violations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): TAV Holdings, Inc. scrap metal facility located on Empire Boulevard in the Glenrose Heights neighborhood of south Atlanta has been fined for serious health and safety violations.

The facility was cited by the U.S. Department of Labor investigators for workplace violation of federal laws, including failing to keep surfaces clear of lead and exposing employees to other dangers, including possible amputation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) proposed fines in excess of $311,000 against the company. A separate citation was issued to a contractor that operated on the company site.

The OSHA citation details nearly 30 serious violations at the plant. The investigations by the authority revealed that potentially hazardous heavy metals including lead and cadmium were allowed to accumulate, thereby exposing employees to serious health hazards. The facility also failed to put in place safety precautions to protect its employees from heavy machinery. Furthermore, it failed to properly label hazardous chemicals used on site.

Meantime, TAV reiterated its commitment to work with OSHA going forward. At the same time, it plans to legally challenge some of the alleged violations, the company spokesperson said.
