Schnitzer Steel Targets 25% Reduction in GHG Emissions from Auto and Metals Recycling Operations

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Portland, Oregon-based Schnitzer Steel announced publication of its fiscal year 2019 Sustainability Report. The company aims to achieve 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its Auto and Metals Recycling operations by end of fiscal year 2025.

The report titled “Recycling Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” highlights the progress of various sustainability initiatives undertaken by the company, as part of its sustainable business model. Further, it highlights a set of multi-year sustainability objectives and various proposed strategies to reach those goals.

Accordingly, the company has set an ambitious goal of Total Case Incident Rate of 1.00 by the end of fiscal year 2025. Furthermore, it aims to achieve at least 90% carbon-free electricity use by 2025. Schnitzer Steel targets to improve overall profitability by $15 per ton by end of fiscal year 2021. Also, it has set a goal of donating at least 10,000 hours of paid volunteer time off by the end of fiscal year 2025.

Brian Lewallen, Chief Sustainability Officer called for important contributions from every company employee, by making meaningful difference through their daily work, in accordance with the sustainability principles.

Tamara Lundgren, President and Chief Executive Officer stated that the company will continue its proactive engagement with companies and communities to boost efforts to reduce carbon footprint and improve the environmental impact of its activities.
