Schnitzer Steel Announced Major Upgrades at Metals Sorting Facilities

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The 2020 Corporate Sustainability Report published by Schnitzer Steel Industries outlines planned upgrades to the company’s key metals sorting facilities.

The company has invested significantly in equipment aimed at reduction of emissions from metals recycling operations, in addition to investments in advanced sorting technologies. It had recently invested in two cable processing systems installed on the U.S. west and east coasts. The equipment cuts insulated copper wire into small pieces, from which the company separates copper from plastic.

The report states that the company is taking necessary action to upgrade its metal recovery technologies at key U.S. facilities. The advanced processes used by these systems help in separating shredded metals into various streams of non-ferrous shredded metals. The above projects are expected to become fully operational by spring 2021. The upgrades will boost non-ferrous material recovery by at least 20%.

A major component of its recycling plan is end-of-life appliance stream. The extraction of metals from these appliances will result in significant reduction of environmental impacts. As per rough estimates, nearly 2.1 million tons of end-of-life appliances end up in U.S. landfills every year.
