West Fraser Timber Declared Permanent Curtailment at B.C. Mills

The reduction in capacity is likely to impact 77 positions at Fraser Lake Sawmill.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. announced amendments to its operating plan at British Columbia sawmills.

According to company press release, it has decided to permanently curtail approximately 170 million board feet of combined production at its Fraser Lake and Williams Lake sawmills and approximately 85 million square feet of plywood production at its Quesnel Plywood mill. The above curtailments will be implemented through elimination of one shift at each facility, it noted.

The reduction in capacity is likely to impact 77 positions at Fraser Lake Sawmill, 15 positions at Williams Lake Lumber, and 55 positions at Quesnel Plywood. The above capacity reductions will come into effect over the course of the fourth quarter of 2022.  The impact on affected employees will be mitigated by offering them work opportunities at other West Fraser operations.

The amendment is mainly on account of the rising challenges in the B.C. region with regards to access to available timber. The market accessibility has also been badly impacted by the ongoing transportation constraints. The announced capacity reductions will help West Fraser to better align its operating capacity with available timber and transport availability, added the company press release.
