Conifex Timber to Cut Mackenzie Sawmill Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): - Conifex Timber Inc. announced operational updates. The company has decided to reduce the sawmill operating schedule at its Mackenzie, British Columbia site to a one-shift basis. Also, it will temporarily reduce its power plant output. Both the above operational changes will come into effect on August 26, 2024. The curtailment of the power plant is expected to come to an end by September 30, 2024, said the company press release.

In a formal notification, the Canadian National Railway said that it would begin locking out Union workers early on August 22, 2024.

Andrew McLellan, President and COO of Conifex stated that a reduced operating schedule at the sawmill is necessary for the foreseeable future due to the combined impact of our inability to ship production on a two-shift basis to end markets, lower lumber products demand, low lumber prices and punitive duty impositions.

Conifex will closely monitor the supply chain and evolving market conditions. The top priority would be position Mackenzie for long term sustainable production. At the same time, it will seek to mitigate the impacts of the curtailments on its employees as much as possible, McLellan said.
