Rio Tinto to Invest in Renovation of Quebec Aluminum Smelter

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Rio Tinto announced investment of $165 million towards renovation of its Grande-Baie aluminum smelter in Quebec, Canada. The renovation works will; be carried out over the period of next two years.

The investment is aimed at refurbishment of two anode baking furnaces at the smelter, which have reportedly reached the end of their useful life. Also, the company will conduct feasibility study on planned replacement of the scrubbers and overhead bridge cranes at the anode production centre.

The proposed works will ensure boosted supply of anodes to the Grande-Baie and Laterriere plants. It promises to deliver sustainability and competitiveness of responsible aluminium production in the region for several decades to come. Furthermore, the company expects the project to generate significant economic benefits, said Martin Lavoie, Operations Director at Rio Tinto.

The carbon emissions associated with the construction project will be offset through various initiatives such as planting of tress near the facility. At the peak of the project, nearly 185 workers are expected to be on site. A large chunk of the economic benefits of the project will be generated in Quebec.
