The study will also conduct a thorough assessment of various smelting technology options.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Rio Tinto announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) to jointly explore the possibilities of setting up an integrated low-carbon aluminium project in India.
According to the agreement, the two parties will look into building a primary aluminum smelter capable of producing up to 1 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) and alumina production capable of producing up to 2 Mtpa, both of which will be fueled by renewable solar and wind energy. It suggests doing an assessment study to examine the project's initial phase of development, which aims to construct a primary aluminum smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes in a strategically located area of India.

To find the most economical option for the project, the study will also thoroughly evaluate different smelting technology options.
As a result, Rio Tinto will investigate a commercial alumina solution, while AMG M&M and its founder, Greenko, will investigate a firmed renewable energy option.
According to Rio Tinto Aluminum CEO Jerome Pecresse, the study is a significant milestone in the company's goal to expand its global footprint of low-carbon aluminum while investigating new prospects in developing markets. Greenko Mahesh Kolli, meanwhile, stated his expectation that the new Memorandum of Understanding will provide much-needed low-carbon metal to advance decarbonization efforts across all sectors.
