SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The revival of moribund paper mills in Nigeria is expected to provide significant boost to the country’s industrialization plan.
As part of its strategic plans, Nigerian administration had commissioned several pulp and paper mills, such as the Nigeria Paper Mill, Jebba, Kwara State, Iwopin Pulp and Paper Company (IPPC) in Ogun State and the Nigeria Newsprint Manufacturing Company (NNMC) in Oku-Iboku, Akwa Ibom.

At its peak, the Jebba mill produced 65,000 tonnes of kraft paper, liner and chipboards, sack kraft, and corrugated cartons every year. The Iwopin facility had achieved 96% of its total slated production capacity. Also, the Oku-Iboku factory had achieved production of 25,440.5 metric tonnes of newsprint per annum.
However, by 2002, all the three mills collapsed, mainly due to mismanagement and corruption. The move towards privatization of the mill facilities through the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) also failed.
The recently launched National Development Plan (NDP) 2021-2025, calls for urgent attention to the paper mills industry. The country offers immense opportunities in printing, publishing, packaging, conversion, pulp and paper making. The revival of the defunct paper mills will boots exporters’ access to key export markets, thus driving the country’s industrialization plan.
