Recyclable Plastics Get a New Lease of Life, Thanks to DS Smith

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European packaging major DS Smith uses innovative closed-loop solutions to reduce manufacturing industry’s dependence on virgin plastics and give recyclable plastics a new lease of life.

According to the company, Europe produces approximately 65 million tonnes of plastic every year. Out of this, nearly 40% is consumed by the packaging industry, whereas almost 20% is used by the building and construction industry. The above two sectors combined account for nearly 39 million tonnes of plastic produced by the region. Despite concerted efforts, bulk of these plastics is either incinerated or is being sent to landfills.

The company uses a two-front approach to tackle the plastic waste problem. This comprises of seeking sustainable alternatives to plastic as well as finding closed-loop solutions for flexible and rigid plastics by ensuring that they are recycled into new products.

The company, in partnership with specialist plastic recyclers such as Plaswood, produces high-quality recycled plastics from LDPE and retail plastics. They are in turn used in a wide range of products and packaging such as carrier bags, outdoor benches and many more. The decade-long association between the two companies have played a key role in reducing waste to landfills and carbon dioxide emissions.

In association with its European network partners, DS Smith has been actively involved in efforts to boost plastic recycling rate.
