SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): As part of efforts by Ellen MacArthur Foundation for establishing global network, South Africa announced launch of new South African Plastics Pact last week, with support from the UK’s Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The members of the pact include several companies such as Coca-Cola Africa, Danone, SPAR and Unilever.
As part of this, the companies have committed to various efforts to reduce use of plastics. These include commitment to take necessary action to deal with problematic plastic through redesign and reuse models. The above companies have agreed to have 100% of their plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. Further, all plastic packaging will have at least 30% recycled content on an average. Also, the pact calls for effective recycling of at least 70% of plastic packaging by 2025.
The project will partner with WWF-SA and the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation (SAPRO) to create new jobs in collection and recycling sector.
Peter Skelton, project leader, WRAP noted that WRAP will share its experience with partners in South Africa in working towards a world free of plastic waste. WRAP is delighted to be part of the development of the South African Plastics Pact.
