Plastics Industry Association Declares Proud Winners of Refocus Awards

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Plastics Industry Association announced prestigious winners of its annual Refocus Sustainability Innovation Awards. The three winners were selected by a panel of recycling and sustainability experts from a total of 35 competent entries.

The winner of the ‘Materials’ section was Vartega for its development of low-cost grade of carbon fiber through the use of its patented recycling process. The production of recycled fibers saves thousands of tons of carbon fiber from landfills. Also, they are used in a wide range of applications.

The ‘Design’ section award was won by Sugar Land, TX-based Accredo Packaging for its sustainable flexible solutions including the AccredoFlex RP Gen2- the all-Polyethylene fully-recyclable stand-up pouch. They provide excellent barrier protection and durability and require significantly less material and energy for production.

Eastman’s carbon renewal technology won the ‘End-of-Life’ category award. The technology breaks down waste plastics into the molecular building blocks of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen and converts them into new, virgin-quality plastics.

Meantime, the Leadership in Innovation Award and People’s Choice Award will be announced at the Refocus Sustainability & Recycling Summit to be held in May this year.
