Reuters Report Unveils Failed Commitments to Solve Plastic Waste Crisis

Many of these have either closed down or are operating in a modest scale, said Reuters.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recently published report by Reuters cites instances of companies making promises to fight against plastic waste but failing to fulfil them.

The report was compiled after examining 30 projects by almost a couple of dozens of advanced recycling companies spread across as many as three continents. Many projects involved partnerships between small advanced recycling firms and oil and chemical giants or leading consumer brands. Many of these have either closed down or are operating in a modest scale, said Reuters.

One among such companies is Renewlogy, which had claimed to use pyrolysis process to find solution to plastic waste issue. The company facility, located at Salt Lake City, had reached a contract with Boise, ID towards collection of hard-to-recycle plastic waste to be turned into fuel. However, the facility never got up and running. The company blamed excessive contamination rate in plastic recyclates as the reason for the failure of the proposed project.

Also, Renewlogy had announced a plastics-to-fuel plant in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a capacity to produce nearly 0.8 million gallons of synthetic fuel per annum. The facility was scheduled for December 2017 completion.
