SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The food and beverage major PepsiCo announced its decision to establish a new PET recycling facility in Delhi- the capital city of Delhi. The plant will work in accordance with the plastic waste management rules to ensure safety and protection of environment through proper and safe recycling of used PET plastic bottles. The plant will be set up in partnership with the Producer Responsibility Organization-Gem Enviro Management Pvt. Ltd.
The partnership will establish collection points for used PET bottles at busy public locations. In addition, centralized collection centres and Reverse Vending Machines will also be set up. The Pepsico programme intends to provide training to waste pickers, apart from ensuring effective recycling of collected PET. The initiative demonstrates PepsiCo’s commitment to support plastic waste management, said Ahmed ElSheikh, President and CEO, PepsiCo India. The company will continue to reduce the impact of its packaging on the environment, he added.
PepsiCo noted that support to increased recycling of plastic waste is in line with the company’s Performance with Purpose 2025 goal. As part of these efforts, the company plans to engage with partners to promote sustainable packaging solutions. A pilot project to produce 100% compostable, plant-based packaging for snacks product will be rolled out during this year. The company has also committed to reduce consumption of paper.
