New Study Revealed Coca-Cola as the Largest Plastic Waste Contributor

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to a new study, The Coca-Cola Company and other fifty five brands are responsible for more than 50% of the world’s plastic pollution. The findings are based on data collected between 2018 and 2022 from across 84 countries through a large number of audit events.

The leading polluting brand was The Coca-Cola Company, which accounted for almost 11% of the plastic pollution across the globe. In second and third place were PepsiCo and Nestle, which accounted for 5% and 3% of the pollution respectively. Danone and Altria too contributed to 3% and 2% of the pollution respectively. The study noted that food and beverage companies emerged as the largest polluters.

The global plastic production has almost doubled from approximately 200 million tonnes (Mt) in 2000 to more than 400 Mt in 2019. The surge in plastic production has been accompanied by rise in plastic waste and release of harmful chemicals and byproducts into the environment.

According to the study, an estimated 2,000 garbage trucks of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans, rivers and lakes every day.

The study recommended that the largest polluters must ensure that single-use and short-lived plastic products are phased out at the earliest. This in turn may significantly reduce global plastic pollution, it said.
