New MoU to Launch Joint Fight Against Ocean Plastic Pollution

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and the Clean Cities, Blue Ocean (CCBO) program under the US Agency for International Development (USAID) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aimed at fighting ocean plastic pollution.

Under the terms of the MoU, SWANA will provide capacity building and technical assistance to CCBO’s global staff, industry representatives, and government officials. The partners will exchange knowledge to advance local waste and resource management and strengthen solid waste management practices in CCBO countries. The collaboration will initially focus on the Caribbean and Latin American countries.
The MoU is considered as an extension of SWANA’s recent activities in the Latin American region. Over the period from 2018 to 2020, it had provided specialized training to landfill operators in Colombia and Chile. In addition, it had partnered with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to promote modern solid waste management in Latin America and the Caribbean.
SWANA’s support will provide further boost to the USAID’s flagship program, which is already in action to prevent ocean plastic pollution at its source in ten countries and 25 countries across the world.
