SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Dubai Municipality announced launch of a new initiative aimed at collecting and recycling 3 million plastic packaging units, which is equivalent to around 60 tons of PET plastic, which are widely used in the packaging of water, soft drinks, juices and food products.
The initiative will focus on inspiring both individuals and institutions to make eco-friendly choices in packaging. Also, it aims to reduce plastic consumption and boost waste diversion rate. The initiative will recycle plastic bottles, which in turn is used to manufacture uniforms for municipal sanitation workers.

The initiative targets to encourage both the private and public sector to promote waste management efforts. The municipality of Dubai has distributed 100 smart plastic packaging containers to various institutions and has designated as many as 17 collection centres for recyclable materials for public use at popular locations.
H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality stated that the initiative highlights the Municipality’sunwavering commitment to reducing the impact of waste material and promoting the circular economy. The initiative is in line with the UAE Net Zero 2050 commitment and national targets, he added.
