Delegates to Discuss Finalization of First Global Plastic Pollution Treaty

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The delegations of various governments across the globe will meet in the Kenyan capital city of Nairobi to finalize the world’s first ever global treaty to address plastic pollution crisis. The third round of talks are scheduled to be held from 13th to 17th, November. The goal is to have the treaty finalized by the end of next year.

The discussions will be focused on arriving at a final decision as to whether targets to restrict plastic production should be decided unilaterally or states should be allowed to choose their own reduction targets. According to environmentalists, this decision will decide the treaty’s ambition.

In the last round of negotiations held in Paris in May this year, various countries including the U.S., Saudi Arabia, India and China favoured an agreement which allows states to have the freedom to determine their own reduction commitments. On the contrary, several Asian and African region countries preferred to have a strong global commitment.

Plastic waste has been a grappling issue all throughout the world. The global plastic waste is predicted to nearly triple by 2060, with only about one-fifth expected to be recycled, according to a report published by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
