SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Coca-Cola Foundation has joined hands with FABE International Foundation in the fight against plastic pollution in Nigeria. The Foundation, with the funding support from Coca-Cola will set up five #TidyNigeriaRecyclingHubs across Lagos State. The collaboration aims to take the previously announced #TidyNigeria recycling drive one step further.

Incidentally, plastic pollution has been a major issue in Lagos for several years now. A large majority of plastics produced either end up in landfills or waterways, thereby polluting the environment and causing danger to human and marine life.

Commenting on the initiative, Saadia Madsbjerg, President, The Coca-Cola Foundation noted that the grant will support local communities in Lagos to better manage its waste. It is part of the company’s policy to extend support to grassroot initiatives to empower communities to properly manage their waste streams.

The project aims to create awareness at home on proper segregation of waste so as to achieve better recycling. Residents will be rewarded with cash incentives for separated waste brought to drop-off centres. It targets to recover at least 600 metric tonnes of plastic waste and bring about behavioural changes in people.
