The BEUC alleged that the companies were making false claims about recyclability of their plastic bottles.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European Commission (EC) said in a statement that Coca-Cola, a major bottling corporation, has agreed to make a number of adjustments to the recycling promises it makes on its plastic bottles.
In November 2023, a warning against major bottling corporations, including Coca-Cola, was issued by the European Consumer Organization (BEUC) and its member organizations from 13 different nations. The businesses were accused by the BEUC of making exaggerated statements regarding the recyclable nature of their plastic bottles.

BEUC specifically contested the company's "100% recyclable" claim, pointing out that most labels and bottle lids are not composed of recycled materials and that virgin plastic is also used in these items. The corporation has now agreed to use more straightforward words like "This bottle, excluding label and cap, is made from 100% recycled plastic" in favor of boasts like "I am a bottle made from 100% recycled plastic."
Additionally, it pledged to make sure that the label's and the marketing's overall message is truthful. Coca-Cola added that the company's digital marketing initiatives on its website and social media accounts mirror the substance of its recent pledges.
While applauding the additional promises, the BEUC pointed out that several of the issues it brought up had not been resolved.
