SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Coca-Cola has highlighted its environmental and community programmes in Nigeria as the company celebrates 75 years of operations in the country. The Coca-Cola System, including Coca-Cola Nigeria, Nigerian Bottling Company and The Coca-Cola Foundation, has supported communities across the country.
One of the major focuses of the Coca-Cola partnership has been its plastic recovery mechanisms. The company said programmes such as CyclePlast, Tidy Nigeria and its Plastics Recycling Programme have helped more than 13,000 Nigerians generate income by collecting and sorting discarded plastic. A new collection hub in Apapa, Lagos, has capacity to process up to 13,000 tonnes of PET bottles each year, providing support to more than 1,000 informal collectors and 70 aggregators.

The efforts undertaken by the company in six Maiduguri communities have resulted in improved access to safer water for over 16,000 people. In Imo State, restoration efforts along the Otamiri River helped protect water resources serving 25 communities. Also, its Youth Empowered initiative and digital training programmes have helped around 70,000 and 130,000 youths, respectively.
Coca-Cola, through its Safe Birth Initiative, has provided equipment and technical support to maternity and neonatal facilities, benefiting more than 43,000 mothers and newborns.
