Pilot Program in Nigeria to Boost Plastic Scrap Recycling

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Dow announced that it has launched a pilot program to collect and recycle plastic waste in Laos, Nigeria. The Project ReflexNG is part of company’s global commitment to create a more circular economy and aims to treat 1 million metric tons of plastic by 2030. The project is being launched in partnership with Omnik, RecyclePoints and the Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre.

Water sachets have emerged as the widely popular source of drinking water in many regions across the country, especially in urban areas. However, careless disposal of used sachets tend to create pollution and environmental problems. These are often not collected by waste pickers as well. The pilot program targets to promote collection and recycling of water sachets, which in turn will be used for new packaging. The goal is prevent nearly 300 million sachets from ending up in environment or landfills.

The collection partner for the pilot program is RecyclePoints, who will collect the sachets through kiosks, by paying incentives to customers. The collected sachets will be processed into post consumer recyclate (PCR) by Omnik. At the same time, Lagos Business School will play a key role by teaching sustainability to small and medium waste businesses.

The pilot phase will come to an end in February 2021, after which Dow will scale up the project to include more flexible packaging.
