Pilot Program Creates Parking Lot Using Recycled Plastic Bags

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Michigan-based Meijer has collaborated with Dow Packaging in a pilot programme that makes use of recycled plastic bags to create parking lot at Meijer’s Holland, Michigan store. The project, in addition to ensuring circularity of plastic bags, also demonstrates the long-term collaboration between the companies towards creation of a more sustainable future.

The pilot project recycled approximately 12,500 pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic, equivalent to the weight of nearly 944,000 plastic grocery bags. Earlier in 20104, Meijer had introduced a novel collection program for clean, dry plastic bags, by placing collection bin at the front entrance of each of their retails stores. All the plastics used by the pilot programme are those deposited by Meijer customers as part of the in-store recycling program.

Rick Keyes, President and CEO of Meijer stated that it is committed to lessening its impact on the environment. The partnership with Dow demonstrates its commitment to a circular economy through recycling and reusing plastic. The pilot project ensures full circularity for plastic bags, while improving customers’ shopping experience, he noted. Furthermore, it intends to provide significant boost to similar initiatives aimed at transforming used plastics into valuable solutions.
