Japan's LPG demand to go down 3% after Tsunami

TOKYO (Scrap Monster): Japan’s LPG demand may decrease even up to 3% of the country’s total demand following the devastating Tsunami hit the country on March 11. Japan’s total demand for LPG was around 16.4 million mt.

About 6.2%, of total domestic LPG demand comes from the Tohoku region, and the estimates say that at least 50% of the demand would go weak.

Tohoku on Honshu, the country's largest island, consists of six prefectures: Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata.

Large swathes of both the Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures have been devastated by the disaster, and LPG demand from these areas is believed to have stood at around 290,00 mt and 220,000 mt, respectively, for the financial year ended March 2010.

Demand from the household sector is estimated to have accounted for 74% and 72% respectively, from these regions, Platts.com reported.
