PCA Announces Conversion of PM at Jackson Mill Into Linerboard

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Packaging Corporation of America (PCA) announced its decision to permanently convert its No.3 paper machine at its Jackson, Alabama mill to linerboard. Further to this, the company has discontinued production of uncoated freesheet (UFS) grades from the machine. The conversion will be carried out at an investment of approximately $440 million.

In response to robust packaging demand, the mill had started linerboard production temporarily in the last quarter of 2020, which it continued in Q1 this year. As per company decision, the 365,000 ton-per-year No. 3 UFS paper machine will now be converted to a 700,000 ton-per-year virgin kraft linerboard machine virgin kraft linerboard machine. The conversion will be carried out in a phased manner over the period of next 36 months, said the company press release.

Upon completion of the first phase in Q2 2022, the converted paper machine is expected to deliver production rate of nearly 75% of the total production capacity. The second-phase outage is planned for mid-2023. By end-2023, the machine is expected to reach its run-rate capacity of 2,000 tons per day.

Meantime, the PM No.1 at the mill will continue to produce UFS grades, added the company press release.
