Global efforts to combat plastic pollution are gaining momentum through expanded recycling, circular economy initiatives, and stronger policies as governments and industry seek to reduce rising plastic waste and its economic impact.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Governments, industries, and environmental organizations worldwide are accelerating efforts to tackle plastic pollution by promoting recycling, stronger policy measures, and international collaboration as plastic waste continues to rise.
More than 460 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated each year globally, with an estimated 19 million tonnes ending up in the environment. Experts warn that if current consumption trends continue, global plastic use could triple by 2060.
The alarming rise in volume of plastic waste also represents a significant economic challenge. The inefficiencies across the plastics value chain are estimated to cost the global economy $4.5 trillion in lost material value.
According to industry leaders and policymakers, the solution lies in building a circular economy that keeps plastics in use for longer through better product design, improved collection systems, and expanded recycling infrastructure.
Several countries are already advancing such initiatives. Nigeria estimates that adopting circular economy strategies could increase its plastic recycling rate to 58%, reduce pollution by 67%, and generate nearly 97,000 jobs by 2040. Also, Thailand aims to recycle all targeted plastic products by 2027 and cut plastic waste entering the sea by 50%.
The World Economic Forum's Global Plastic Action Partnership is supporting 25 countries in developing national action plans to curb plastic pollution.
