Further, it reduced CO2 emissions by as much as 4,500 tonnes, Janssen said.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Smurfit Kappa Roermond Paper Mill reached significant sustainability milestone by achieving notable reduction in carbon emissions from mill operations. The innovative steam system in the mill has helped the company deliver 3% reduction in carbon footprints in 2018. The ongoing energy and carbon dioxide emission reduction programme at the mill has so far been able to reduce specific CO2 emissions by nearly 23% since its introduction in 2005.
The Roermond Paper Mill has three paper machines that produce recycled paper for corrugated packaging. Earlier, it has been reusing only part of the residual steam of two of the machines. As part of the project, Smurfit Kappa installed a sophisticated control system to integrate the steam systems from all three paper machines. According to Wim Janssen, Energy and Production Technologist at the mill, the reuse of excess steam from two of the machines in the third machine resulted in notable reduction in the mill’s overall gas consumption. Further, it reduced CO2 emissions by as much as 4,500 tonnes, Janssen said.
Wouter Lap, MD of the Roermond Paper Mill stated that the integrated steam project demonstrates the mill’s leadership position in the paper industry in sustainable energy consumption.
Smurfit Kappa had reported its strongest ever annual financial results in 2018, registering record profits and significant growth across all segments and regions.
