SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ND Paper has issued a statement on the status of its Fairmont, West Virginia paper mill.
According to company spokesperson Jay Capron, it has decided to take extended downtime at its Old Town, ME mill. Also, the company will significantly reduce market pulp production at the Fairmont division. The primary reasons behind both the above decisions are rising costs and unfavourable market conditions, he added. It must be noted that the Fairmont mill employs nearly 100 people.

Commenting on the status of the mill, the spokesperson noted that the company has been in constant touch with the affected employees, providing them all needed assistance in accessing resources which could help them identify alternative employment opportunities, including potential vacancies at other ND Paper mills. A few employees have already been offered positions at other ND Paper facilities, Capron said.
The company is continually evaluating market conditions for a potential restart of the mill operations, it noted.
Also, ND Paper plans to bring online a new 1,400-ton OCC pulping line at the Biron mill, whose official opening is scheduled to be held in mid-May this year. The new line will be capable of producing 2,000 tons per day of pulp from converted bales of recycled OCC.
