International Paper Announced Huge Investment in Cedar River Containerboard Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Memphis, Tennessee-headquartered pulp and paper company, International Paper (IP) announced plans to invest approximately $103 million at its containerboard mill in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The project comprises building two natural gas power boilers to generate steam. The construction is expected to begin during the second quarter of the year, with full operations expected by end-2025.

The project is expected to create nearly 100 jobs during the construction phase. Once fully operational, the project will create seven additional full-time jobs, thus bringing the mill’s total employment to 247. In addition, the project will replace coal-based steam generators, which in turn will lead to reduction of the mill’s emission by at least one-fourth. Incidentally, IP had earlier committed to reduce its enterprise greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by the end of the current decade.

Jay Royalty, Senior Vice President, Containerboard, International Paper noted that the proposed investment is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of the Cedar River Mill team members. Furthermore, it demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to the community and its Industrial Packaging business, he said.

Also, he extended thanks to the City of Cedar Rapids and the State of Iowa for their support and collaboration during the planning phases of the project.
